How To Prepare For Dance Exams

As examination looms closer each day, preparation work shifts up a gear. Less than a week to the big day, all seeds have been sown. At this point of time, any last ditch efforts to polish up dance techniques would be futile. Instead, all efforts should be focused on mental preparation to reduce exam jitters.

Mental Simulation
Run through the examination sequence in your head. Remember how to enter the room, greet the examiner, where and how to stand. Revise each exercise by reminding yourself all the details and your most common mistakes. If you have a notebook, write them down.

Attire Check
Make sure you have the right attire and that they are clean and in good condition. Whenever in doubt, check with the teacher. Purchase a new set early to prevent any last minute panic situation should the stocks be unavailable.

Hair
Get ready all the items that you need for your hairdo. Do you have enough hair pins, hair net, hair gel and hair spray? Always bring your own to exam day. Practice doing up your hair until you are familiar. Do not rely on your teacher to do everything for you, she may not have the time to do so if examination progresses faster than scheduled.

Look Presentable
You want to make sure that you are properly groomed for your examiner and leave a good impression as it plays a part in the grading. Do not wear any types of jewelry, make up, nail polish or tattoo on exam day. If you have any small cuts and require a bandage, choose one that is transparent or a colour close your skin tone.

Rest Well
Have a good sleep the night before, do not watch TV or play games late into the night. Refrain from participating in any strenuous activities that may injure or tire yourself out. Avoid consuming junk food and drink plenty of water the night before.

Exam Day
Have a light meal prior to the exam to prevent upsetting your stomach. Arrive about 1.5 to 2 hours before your exam timing to give yourself ample time to settle down physically and mentally. Bring along a jacket and a water bottle, you feel cold and thirsty easily when you are nervous. Go to the toilet before you enter the exam room.

Remember to smile and be confident. Do not worry about the results, you will do better if you just enjoy yourself. Best of luck!
